Relational communication<\/b> is often misunderstood.<\/p>

You might think it\u2019s all about speaking politely, avoiding conflict or agreeing with everyone on everything. Or perhaps you\u2019ve come across the idea that relational communication is a bit too \u201csoft\u201d for the real world of work.<\/p>

But here's the truth:<\/p>

Relational communication makes collaboration stronger, clearer \u2013 and far more effective.<\/b><\/p>

Especially in teams that are busy, have many opinions, and high levels of expertise.<\/p>

Relational communication is about being aware of the relationship between you and the person you are talking to \u2013 while you are communicating.<\/p>

That is to say:<\/p>

  • How your message lands with the other person<\/li>
  • How the receiver's reaction influences your way of continuing the conversation<\/li>
  • How the conversation is not just about the content, but also about the relationship between you<\/li><\/ul>

    One could say it's the art of listening with the body and speaking with consideration \u2013 without losing clarity or direction.<\/p>

    And no, that doesn't mean you have to \u201csugarcoat everything\u201d. Quite the opposite. It means you communicate clearly and with respect for the recipient's experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Because that is how trust and psychological safety are created.<\/p>

    Because your words \u2013 however wise they may be \u2013 have no value if the recipient feels pressured, ignored, or misunderstood.<\/p>

    And because nobody wants to collaborate with someone they don't feel comfortable with.<\/p>

    Relational communication strengthens both the professional and the personal.<\/b><\/p>

      • We forget to check how the message lands.<\/li><\/ul>

        We are busy. So we speak quickly, send a message and expect that \u201cit has been received\u201d. But we don't check how it was understood. This is where misunderstandings and conflicts begin.<\/p>

        • We avoid discomfort \u2013 and lose clarity<\/li><\/ul>

          \u00a0In an attempt to maintain a good atmosphere, we hold back. We avoid the conversations that are actually necessary. This creates ambiguity \u2013 and ultimately more unrest than honesty would have caused.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

          Here are three simple exercises you can use at your next team meeting.<\/p>

          How did what I said land?\u201c<\/strong><\/p>

          Introduce a habit of asking:<\/p>

          \u201cHow does it land with you when I say it like that?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>

          It takes 10 seconds \u2013 and opens up for dialogue instead of resistance.<\/p>

          Coach: Curiosity and feedback culture<\/p>

          \u201cI heard you say...\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

          Let one person talk about a challenge for 1 minute. The other repeats it in their own words:<\/p>

          \u201cI heard you say\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>

          And the first confirms or adjusts. This provides clarity and the feeling of being heard.<\/p>

          Trainer: Active listening and mutual understanding<\/p>

          3. \u201cHow would you like to receive feedback?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

          Before you give feedback in the team, first ask:<\/p>

          It creates security \u2013 and makes the feedback more relevant and welcome.<\/p>

          It doesn't require long courses or expensive programmes. First and foremost, it requires a willingness to listen, ask, and be curious about each other \u2013 even when things are moving quickly.<\/p>

          But it helps to put a good framework in place. That's exactly what I do when I teach relational communication and psychological safety for teams and leaders in both private and public organisations.<\/p>
